For patients with excessive dental fear or anxiety we offer oral conscious sedation. The medications used for OCS are known as Benzodiazapines: we specifically use Diazepam (valium). The dose is based on body weight. Valium affects the central nervous system offering a two-fold affect; an anti-anxiety or sedative affect and often some level of an amnesic affect. You still have the ability to maintain an open airway and respond to verbal and physical stimulus. Valium usually takes affect within 30-60 minutes, is at its maximum affect between 1-2 hours and can have lasting affects up to 24 hours; usually drowsiness. You must have someone accompany you to your appointment, remain in the office during your visits entirety and drive you home.
